Why Is It So Hard to Find The Right Marketer?
You made the jump and decided to launch your business. Long hours and sleepless nights to make sure that your website was just right, your SEO in place and all your social media handles in order. But now you’re struggling to get traffic and sales. What to do?
There’s a myth in entrepreneurship — “Build it and they will come” — but as anyone who’s ever launched a business knows, this is far from the truth. Your business needs to get in front of the right people at the right time with the right offer, and platforms such as Google and Facebook have made this easier than ever before. But the popularity of these platforms have led to increased competition and costs.
You’ve tried your hand at a few marketing experiments but the only result was Google and Facebook getting a little richer. Sound familiar? You’re not alone!
Designing, executing and measuring marketing campaigns is time and energy intensive, which is why 75% of all digital marketing today is outsourced to freelancers / agencies. But with over a million agencies and tens of millions of freelancers who all claim to be the best internet marketing service, how do you figure out who is the right service provider for your business?
Before starting your search, spend some time to build out your marketing brief:
- Frame your marketing objectives: Build out a brief that explains exactly what you need your marketing to achieve.
- Your ideal customer profile: a description of a customer or set of customers that includes demographic, geographic, and psychographic characteristics
- Which channels you want to market on: Adwords, Facebook, Instagram? All of the above?
- Your budget: How much are you willing to spend each month?
With your brief in place, it’s time to go looking for a marketer. You have three options:
1. Using a search engine:
You’ll be presented with a long list of agencies who claim to be the best at what they do. They’re also very good at buying ads and positioning content for the right keywords. However, none of these listings understand your business goals and they haven’t even seen your brief yet! Be careful with this method.
2. Platforms like UpWork, Freelancer.com, etc:
These are slightly better channels since they give you the opportunity to write out your brief and provide some basic filtering options. But once again, the marketers here are not vetted or verified. It’s very easy for them to make tall claims which you don’t have any way to assess for yourselves
3. Asking your network for a referral:
Compared to the other options, this method at least has some filtering applied to it — after all one doesn’t refer someone they’ve had a poor experience working with. The trade off here is that your reach is limited by the size of your network and even if you come across someone who is great at Facebook marketing, are they the right fit for your particular business needs? How would you go about vetting this?
None of these options is perfect, and each of them require you, the busy entrepreneur to spend your precious time on vetting, interviewing and taking a leap of faith with a marketer.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could quickly submit your brief and get matched directly to marketers who:
- know your industry
- have sold similar products in the past to customers who match your target market
- had their past ad performance verified
- fit within your budget?
And came at no extra cost?
